NEWS AND EVENTS

July 2009

“The Park has come a long way from a rock strewn, scrub oak area to a place where many visit to pay respects to those who have served,” Selectman and park committee member Lawrence N. Ashley wrote in an e-mail. “However, we still have a lot of work to do with our next focus being on memorials for those that have served in wars and other conflicts as well as the Police and Firefighter memorials.”
John Remedis, also the Freetown VFW Commander, said the committee is still looking to add memorials for police and firefighters in addition to those who have fought in the wars in Iraq, Afghanistan and Vietnam. He also said committee members want to add a memorial for Freetown native Tyler Trahan, a Navy Explosive Ordnance Disposalman who died in combat last April.
Remedis said committee members are also planning to place a cannon at the park in honor of Freetown Civil War hero John Deane, who was also a Fall River grocer.
